Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms Test- Study Guide

As a part of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms we have a right to:
o   Fundamental Freedomsàexpress (state) your opinions
o   Fundamental Freedomsàjoin (belong) to any group
o   Democratic rightsà Parliament needs to have a meeting at least one time per year
o   Mobility Rightsà As a Canadian citizen, you have the right to stay, leave or enter Canada as you wish as long as you do not have a criminal record
o   Minority Language Education Rightsà as Canadian citizens, we have a right to receive schooling in both English and French
o   Legal Rightsà you have the right to a fair trial and are assumed to be innocent until proven guilty
o   Fundamental Freedomsà right to practice whatever religion you choose (wish to practice)
o   Charter can only be amended by the governmentà people vote against or for changes and then a decision is made
o   Charter falls underneath our constitution

o    A document that outlines the rights and freedoms guaranteed to Canadians

Principles of Democracy: think of the acronym JEFR
1.     Equity
2.     Justice
3.     Representation
4.     Freedoms

Fundamental Freedoms:
o   Right to practice whatever religion you choose
o   Right to express (state) your opinions
o   Right to belong to any group
o   Right to organize peaceful meetings

Democratic Rights:
o   Right to vote in elections
o   To participate in an election (if you are a Canadian Citizen and are 18 years of age or older)
o   To run for an election
o   To have legislatures and Parliament meet at least once a year
o   To have elections at least every 5 years

Representative Democracy:
o   Where citizens elect people to represent them (elected officials)

Collective Rights:

o   Rights that help to protect a certain group (Aboriginal people, Francophones, Anglophones)
